Tattoo removal in Chattanooga, with the session count you'll actually need

Most clinics quote you a package. We'd rather tell you the truth first: a lot of people walk in wanting full removal and walk out booking four fading sessions for a cover-up instead, and save two thousand dollars doing it. Free consultation, written estimate, no pressure to prepay anything.

Consultations are free and include skin typing, an ink read and a written session range before you commit to anything.

Two different jobs, two very different prices

Before you price anything, work out which one you're buying. Most people ask for the expensive one by default.

Fade for a cover-up

3–5 sessions

You only need the old ink light enough for a new design to sit over it. Roughly 40% of the cost of full removal, done in three to six months.

Complete removal

6–12 sessions

Bare skin, or as close as your ink chemistry allows. Twelve to twenty-four months of appointments spaced six to twelve weeks apart.

The mechanism

The laser doesn't take the ink out. You do.

Tattoo ink sits one to two millimetres down in the dermis, in particles too large for your immune cells to pick up and carry away. That's the entire reason a tattoo is permanent — not because the ink is special, but because the clumps are too big to move.

A Q-switched or picosecond laser fires a pulse measured in billionths or trillionths of a second. The ink absorbs it, heats faster than it can shed the energy, and shatters. What's left is small enough for macrophages to collect and route into the lymphatic system.

That clean-up takes six to twelve weeks. It's why spacing matters more than which laser brand a clinic advertises on its window, and why a clinic booking you every four weeks is selling you sessions rather than results.

Cross-section of tattooed skin during laser removalThree stacked skin layers are shown. Tattoo ink particles sit as large clumps in the upper dermis, about one to two millimetres below the surface. A laser pulse passes harmlessly through the epidermis, shatters the large ink clumps into small fragments, and immune cells then carry those fragments away through the lymphatic system over the following weeks.EPIDERMIS — 0.1 mmDERMIS — ink lives here, 1–2 mm downSUBCUTANEOUS FATLaser pulsepasses through the surface1 · Intact ink clumps2 · Shattered by the pulse3 · Immune cells haul it offto the lymphsystem — 6–12 weeks
The laser does not remove ink. It shatters clumps too big to move into fragments small enough for your immune system to carry away — which is why the weeks betweensessions do most of the work, and why spacing them too close wastes your money.

The cheapest per-session price is often the most expensive removal

Underpowered settings and four-week booking intervals both stretch a job out. Nine sessions at $99 costs more than six at $140, takes eight months longer, and puts three extra rounds of trauma through the same patch of skin. Compare totals.

Straight answers to the six questions we get most

If yours isn't here, call 865-279-6740 and ask. There's no charge for a question.

How much does tattoo removal cost in Chattanooga?

Locally, sessions start around $75–$125 for something tiny like a finger word or wrist script, run $175–$300 for a hand-sized piece, and reach $450–$800 for a half or full sleeve. Chattanooga sits below the national median — big-city clinics charge 15–30% more for identical work.

Per-session pricing is the wrong number to fixate on, though. What matters is sessions × price. A $99 session at a clinic that needs 14 passes costs more than a $250 session at one that needs 7. Ask every clinic for a total estimate, in writing, before you pay for anything.

How many sessions will I actually need?

Most complete removals land between 6 and 12 sessions. Amateur or stick-and-poke work often clears in 3–6 because the ink is shallow and sparse. Dense professional colour — especially anything with green, teal or light blue — can run 10–15.

If you only want the tattoo faded enough for a cover-up artist to work over, that's typically 3 to 5 sessions. Same laser, a fraction of the money.

Does it hurt?

Yes, but briefly. Most people describe it as hot grease spattering, or a thick rubber band snapped hard against sunburn. A postage-stamp tattoo takes 20–40 seconds of actual firing. A full sleeve panel might take 8–10 minutes.

Cooled air, topical numbing applied 45 minutes ahead, and sectioning larger pieces across visits all take the edge off. Nobody has ever told us it was worse than getting the tattoo — mostly because it's over so much faster.

Will my tattoo be completely gone?

Usually, and honestly — sometimes not quite. Black ink on lighter skin on the upper arm clears reliably. Yellow and white ink often barely move at all. Green and teal are the stubborn middle.

There's also ghosting: a faint shadow or a subtle change in skin texture where the tattoo sat, visible in raking light even after the pigment is gone. It's common, it's permanent, and any clinic that doesn't mention it before session one isn't being straight with you.

When's the best time of year to start in Chattanooga?

September or October. Chattanooga's UV index hits 11 in June and July — extreme, with a burn time around ten minutes. Treated skin can't be tanned going in and needs strict sun protection for at least four weeks after.

Start in the fall and you bank three or four sessions through the low-UV stretch from October to March before the next Valley summer. Start in May and you'll spend the summer either sleeved up in 88°F heat at 75% humidity, or skipping sessions.

Do you treat people from North Georgia?

Regularly — Fort Oglethorpe is nine miles south and Ringgold is seventeen down I-75. Worth knowing: Georgia requires a consulting physician to examine patients before laser treatment, while Tennessee requires physician supervision but no pre-treatment exam. A Georgia resident treated in Tennessee is treated under Tennessee rules.

That isn't a loophole and it isn't a selling point. It's just a difference worth asking any clinic about on either side of the line.

Free consultation

Get a straight answer about your tattoo

Send a photo-free description or bring the tattoo in. Either way you'll leave the consultation with a session range, a price band and an honest read on what's realistic — including whether fading for a cover-up would serve you better than full removal.

  • Free consultation. Skin typing, ink assessment and a written session estimate before you commit to anything.
  • No package pressure. We'll tell you if 4 fading sessions do the job instead of 11 removal sessions.
  • Honest on limits. Green, teal and yellow inks are hard. Ghosting happens. You hear that up front, not at session six.
